Easter Island, also known as Rapa Nui, is a small island located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean. It is part of Chile and is one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world.
The iconic large stone statues called Moai found on the island were created by the Rapa Nui people, around the 13th century.
There are a number of theories and assumptions to understand the purpose behind these statues. The Rapa Nui people, the indigenous people of Easter Island, developed a unique culture and civilization, including the creation of moai statues.
Researchers believe they have solved one of the mysteries surrounding these statues, namely their location. They argue that the structures must have been carved and placed near a source of fresh water.
There are around 1,000 moai statues found on the island. In February 2023, a team of scientific volunteers from three Chilean universities discovered new moai at the bottom of a now-dry lake inside the Rano Raraku volcano.
This discovery is unique because until now, no other statues have ever been found in any lake. This is the first of its kind on the island. It certainly opens up a lot of new opportunities to understand the cultural significance of these mysterious statues.
